The Right Mowing Height for Central Texas Lawns in Summer

One of the easiest ways to help a Cedar Park lawn survive summer is also one of the most overlooked: raise the mower. Cutting too short in the heat stresses the grass exactly when it needs help holding moisture.

Healthy mowed lawn in a Cedar Park yard during summer

It is tempting to scalp a lawn in summer so you can mow less often. In Central Texas heat that strategy backfires. Taller grass shades its own soil, keeps the root zone cooler, holds moisture longer, and crowds out weeds. A lawn mowed too short bakes at the surface, dries out faster, and burns more quickly under the June and July sun. Mowing height is a genuine drought-defense tool here.

Heights by grass type

Most Cedar Park lawns are St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia, and each has its own summer sweet spot. St. Augustine does best mowed tall, around three to four inches, because the extra height shades and protects it through the heat. Common Bermuda is lower-growing and can be kept shorter, roughly one to two inches, but even Bermuda benefits from the higher end of its range in peak summer. Zoysia generally sits in between, around two to three inches. In all cases, leaning toward the taller end during the hottest months pays off.

Follow the one-third rule

Never remove more than about a third of the blade height in a single mow. Cutting more than that shocks the grass, exposes the lower stems, and stresses the plant during a period when it is already fighting heat. If the lawn has gotten tall, bring it down over a couple of mowings rather than all at once. Mowing a little more often at the correct height beats infrequent scalping.

Sharp blades and grasscycling

A sharp mower blade cuts cleanly instead of tearing, which reduces moisture loss and the brown, frayed tips that invite disease. Leaving the clippings on the lawn, or grasscycling, returns moisture and nutrients to the soil and helps it stay cooler, as long as you are mowing regularly enough that the clippings are short. Both small habits add up to a more resilient summer lawn.
